As a consumable part, the chain will inevitably wear out during use.
It should be noted that if the chain is worn out excessively, it will aggravate the wear of the chainring and flywheel, thereby shortening the service life of the entire transmission system; in extreme cases, it may even cause the chain to break, and the rider will face the safety risk of being trapped on the road.
Regular inspection and timely chain replacement are necessary maintenance measures to ensure riding safety and system durability. To accurately judge the chain's wear, SUPERTEAM provides the following two reference methods.
1.Observe the surface condition of the chain
The surface of a new chain is usually smooth and metallic. After repeated use, its surface will gradually become rough and dull. Once the chain is found to have obvious cracks, rust, or deformation, it indicates that it has been severely damaged and must be replaced immediately.
2.Measure the elongation of the chain
The above method may have a certain degree of judgment error. A more accurate method should be to use a chain caliper to detect the degree of wear regularly. For example, using a chain caliper can quickly and accurately measure the degree of wear of the chain. SUPERTEAM recommends testing every 2-3000km. If the chain still does not stretch significantly after exceeding this mileage, it is recommended to check it with a chain gauge once a month until it stretches more than 0.5mm before replacing it.
Although the chain is not so bad, if it continues to be used after exceeding the recommended mileage, it may cause accelerated wear of the flywheel and reduced speed performance.
If the chain is replaced every two to three thousand kilometers, the life of the flywheel can also be extended. The original flywheel can almost be used for 10,000 kilometers before being eliminated. However, if a chain is used for 6-7,000 kilometers before being replaced, it may cause excessive wear of the flywheel. At this time, even if a new chain is replaced, the flywheel may not bite the chain, causing the chain to jump teeth.
3.How to maintain the chain
If you don’t often ride in a wet and muddy environment, you can generally use dry chain oil. Oil it every two to three hundred kilometers and make sure that each chain is lubricated. Remember to wipe off the excess chain oil after oiling.
If you must often ride in the rain or muddy environment, it is recommended that you use wet chain oil, as it is more easily contaminated with dust and dirt.
It is recommended to clean the chain briefly before oiling each time so that the chain oil can effectively lubricate it. The frequency of oiling can be compared with dry chain oil.
